Road safety encouraged during fall harvest

Ontario Agriculture Week is winding down, but those in the farming sector want to keep the conversation going about safe road habits.

Farmers are reminded to ensure safety precautions are taken ahead of the fall harvest.

"Make sure that lights are working, the [slow-moving vehicle] signs are visible, and shields are in place," said Ann Anger from the Essex County Federation of Agriculture (ECFA).

She added that farmers should have a plan in place in case something goes wrong and to be certain that all helpers know how to properly operate the equipment.

"If you're tired, take a short break," was Anger's most important piece of advice.

"Fellow drivers remember that you share the road," she added. "Drive with extra care and attention when you're around slow-moving vehicles and farm equipment."

Anger urges patience when approaching a vehicle displaying a yield or slow-moving vehicle sign and reminds motorists to pass farm equipment carefully.

"Large equipment may be taking a left-hand turn or maneuvering around signs, mailboxes, or even guardrails. Don't try and pass until the operator can see you and the road is clear," she said.

Ontario Agriculture Week is held annually, during the first week of October. It's viewed as an opportunity to celebrate the Agri-food sector and to learn more about the how, what, where, when, and why of food production in the province.
