Detroiters to select new mayor on Tuesday

For the first time in 12 years, Windsor's American neighbours will choose a new mayor.

Election Day in the U.S. is Tuesday. With 2025 an odd-numbered year, most races, such as the one in Detroit, will focus on local candidates and ballot issues.

Detroit will select a mayor, city councillors, clerk, and police commissioners.

Running for mayor are City Council President Mary Sheffield and Detroit megachurch pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr.

They were the top two vote-getters in the primary election held this summer out of a field of nine registered candidates. Among the unsuccessful primary candidates were 7th Ward Councillor Fred Durhal Jr., former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, and former at-large councillor Saunteel Jenkins.

Sheffield, 38, has been City Council President since 2022, the youngest ever to hold that office. She had previously worked for Wayne County as a disciplinary hearing officer, and had unsuccessfully run for the Michigan House of Representatives in 2010.

Kinloch, 52, studied theology at American Baptist College, and has been the senior pastor of Triumph Church since 1997. In that time, the church experienced explosive growth, and today it has multiple campuses reaching about 44,000 people.

The winner of Tuesday's election will succeed three-term incumbent Mike Duggan, who is leaving office to run as an independent candidate for Michigan governor. Gretchen Whitmer is barred from running in 2026 due to term limits.

Polls in Michigan are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
