Careless driving charge laid in serious crash involving horse-drawn buggy

More than a week after a serious two-vehicle crash involving a horse-drawn buggy that sent one person to hospital, a charge of careless driving has been laid against a Southgate resident.

Emergency crews were called to Grey Road 9 shortly before 7:50 a.m. on July 14 where a vehicle had collided with the buggy.

One person who was riding in the buggy was taken to hospital in Toronto with non-life threatening injuries.

Following a thorough investigation, a 42-year-old from Southgate has been charged with careless driving, Grey Bruce OPP announced on Tuesday.

They are now reminding drivers that horse-drawn vehicles are common in Grey Bruce and people travelling country roads should be prepared to encounter them.

"Horse-drawn buggies travel about 14 km/h, making them one of the slowest moving vehicles on the road," police said. "If you encounter a horse-drawn buggy, maintain a safe following distance and leave plenty of room when you pass. Passing too closely may startle the horse, causing it to suddenly change direction."

Police added that as horse-drawn buggies are one of the lightest vehicles on the road, its occupants are at a greater risk for injury in the event of a crash.
